This 3-day class focuses on using transparent and translucent glass (big emphasis on tempered, but also plate, stained, and textured glass) and Polymer Clay for Mosaic Artists.
By the end of the workshop, students will have completed (or come close to completing) several handmade polymer clay tiles, a piece of polymer clay jewelry, and 1 or 2 small (ungrouted) tempered glass/polymer clay mosaic pieces. (Grouting will be demonstrated and discussed, but students will not have time to grout during the workshop.
No previous experience necessary.
~~~~Tempered Glass:
Some of the topics: Review of some of the leading tempered glass artists, the possibilities, tools, supplies and where to get them, substrates, and four adhesives will be discussed and demonstrated (including Susan's 2 favorites).
You can bring your own decorative papers, photos, or other flat (paper-thin) mementos if you'd like.
You'll be delighted with this simple technique and the art you create in just one weekend!
~~~~Polymer Clay:
Susan will teach the basics of polymer clay including tools, supplies, safety, and several decorative texture and finish techniques. She will focus on techniques for combining your handmade polymer clay tiles with tempered glass and other mosaic tesserae. You will create a piece that combines your polymer clay pieces with tempered glass! You will use some of your handmade tiles in your tempered glass mosaic.
This class is primarily for mosaic artists who want to learn how to make their own tesserae w/polymer clay. PC allows you to create tesserae suited to your mosaic's color, texture, shape, and thickness without the need of a kiln. A toaster oven or kitchen oven is all you need!
~~~~Grouting:
Susan will demonstrate several ways to create colored grout, including the blended tie-dye effect of mixing several colors of grout in one piece. She will also demonstrate how to grout pieces that include polymer clay.
